Ruby has come to camp...summer camp just for kids with diabetes.  The American Diabetes Association Camp Carefree is located in New Durham, NH, at Lion's Camp Pride on Merrymeeting Lake.  122 campers will be attending camp in just a few days, but right now it's staff training week.  Counselors, and waterfront, office, and medical staff are gearing up to make this the best summer camp experience ever.  If you'd like to find out more about Camp Carefree, check out our website www.CampCarefreekids.org.

Ruby will be meeting the rest of the staff tonight at dinner, along with her brother, Rufus (#2).  They plan to spend a day in each of the camper cabins to enjoy the camper experience right along with the campers.  We will find out what they do each day after the campers write their journal entries.  I bet they are going to have a lot of fun!

Today Ruby #2 came to stay with me at Camp Carefree.  She was one of the cutest learning tools I have ever seen.  When I was younger, it would have been a real treat to have Ruby to help me do injections and finger pricking.  Even as a 19 year old, Ruby is adorable.  Thanks for letting me take her for the night.  We had an early evening after unpacking in my new cabin!

Thanks!

Ruby spent our last day preparing for the arrival of our Silver Birches.  We had Ruby out with us as we decorated the campers’ beds and set up testing stations.  It was fun having Ruby in the cabin today but we’re not half as excited as the campers will be to see her later on during camp.  Having Ruby back will be a great treat for the girls and we can’t wait until they get the chance to write their own journal!

We took Ruby Bass Fishing!  She had a great time!  Casting, reeling in, hooking worms (eww! she didn't like that part).  But, here favorite part was spending some time with the Silver Birches!  Ruby means a lot to us, and we love what she represents...kids or adults with diabetes can do ANYTHING!!! (Including go to outerspace!)

Ruby got to stay the night with the Whispering Pines!  She met some other friends (stuffed animal friends).  We shared our snack with her.  Shave got to hang out with all the Pines and talk.  Ruby learned how to hula-hoop.  She had a really fun time and we hope to see her around Camp Carefree!  We love Ruby!

Ruby spent the night with me.  She did really good yesterday.  She watched me play a lot of games.  Plus Ruby even did "closing circle".  When someone gave me a squeeze I had to shake Ruby to let Keirra know it was her turn to squeeze the other person's hand.  So in the end I think Ruby had a good day with me.

Ruby is spending today in the Steel Mags.  Ruby stood with the girls in flag line.  Then Ruby went back tot he Steel Mags cabin for cabin cleaning for Golden Broom.  Ruby went swimming or watched the girls swim.  Then at 10:15 Ruby went to morning snack with the girls.  After snack she went to Issues & Answers and had lots of fun.  At 11:30 the lunch/testing bell Ruby was very excited because she could help and watch the girls test and eat lunch.  At lunch Ruby sat at table #15 with counselor Ben and made sure all the children at all of their carbs. Then Ruby went with on of the girls to her activity and fished and had lots of fun.  Then Ruby went to Rest Hour and slept with one of the campers.  The she went to afternoon snack.  After Snack Ruby went to Arts & Crafts and helped Kayla paint her mask.  The she went off to cabin time and helped the girls plan their skit for the Camper Show tonight.  At 5:00 PM it was time for dinner testing once again.  She enjoyed watching the girls and watched them take their insulin.  At dinner, she sat at Chelsea's table and made sure her table at the right amount of carbs.  Off to the Camper Show...she had an awesome time.  Back to the cabin for testing.  Ruby had another wonderful time with the Steel Mags.  Ruby good luck and we will miss you tons!

Today is out take day and all the campers' parents have come to take them home.  Ruby and Rufus are sad to see them go because they've had a great time visiting them during the camp session.  But now it's time for Ruby and Rufus to head out for their next adventures.  Before they go, they'd like to share the words to the Camp Carefree Song.

"At Camp Carefree we're all good friends

We all stand by to lend a hand

The memories made we will carry on

From year to year at Camp Carefree"
