WHO ARE RUFUS AND RUBY?

Rufus and Ruby are the bears with diabetes, created by Carol Cramer.  Both Rufus and Ruby have patches on the four primary insulin injection sites (arms, legs, tummy, and bottom), and both wear medic alert bracelets.

Rufus and Ruby are traveling Ambassador Bears who share information about Type I diabetes.  As they travel, they, or the family they visit, write a journal entry describing their adventures.  The bears travels are sponsored by .

RECENT ADVENTURES...

Rufus and Ruby left planet Earth in October 2002 on orbiter Atlantis on a mission to the International Space Station.  They experienced the thrill of launch, the ups and downs of floating weightless, and the wows of seeing the Earth from space.  Click here to read more about this exciting mission.

RUFUS AND RUBY VISIT CAMP CAREFREE

Rufus and Ruby visited Camp Carefree during the first week of camp (August 3-9, 2003).  Each day, they spent a day with a different camper cabin; Rufus with boys and Ruby with girls.  At the end of the day, each cabin wrote a journal entry describing Rufus' or Ruby's day at camp.  These journal entries were sent to Children With Diabetes to be posted in the online journals for each bear, so that they may share the summer camp experience with other kids with diabetes.  The journal entries are also available at the links below.

In honor of Rufus' and Ruby's trip to space, each cabin was invited to come up with one space related question which was answered by Astronaut Ed Lu.  Ed was in residence on the International Space Station during the summer, 2003.  Communication with Ed will took place by email.  The questions and answers are available at the link below.
