DIABETES EDUCATION
The goal of the
ADA Camp Carefree medical staff is for each
camper to understand the relationship between diet, insulin, and exercise as the
central tenets of self-management. Campers are encouraged to use their
daily lives at camp as a springboard for developing personal management skills.
There is group teaching and one-on-one instruction. Special educational
attention is given to campers who have been recently diagnosed. |

NUTRITION EDUCATION
The
ADA Camp Carefree nutrition staff, directed by a registered
dietitian and faculty member from the University of New Hampshire's Nutritional
Sciences Program, develops a meal plan for each camper. The plan is
revised as necessary. Each camper participates in small group sessions
with a nutritionist to better understand the role that nutrition plays in
glucose control and how this is translated into meal plans. Ongoing
practical instruction occurs at meals with campers and counselors working
together to insure proper individual exchanges in a family style setting. |
