DIABETES EDUCATION
The goal of the
ADA Camp Carefree medical staff is for each
camper to understand the relationship between diet, insulin, and exercise as the
central tenets of self-management. Campers are encouraged to use their
daily lives at camp as a springboard for developing personal management skills.
There is group teaching and one-on-one instruction. Special educational
attention is given to campers who have been recently diagnosed.

NUTRITION EDUCATION
The
ADA Camp Carefree nutrition staff is
directed by a registered dietitian who is also a certified diabetes
educator and certified pediatric nutrition specialist. Nutrition
students and dietetic interns from the University of NH assist with the
development of individual meal plans for the campers.
The plan is revised as necessary. Each camper participates in small
group sessions with a nutritionist to better understand the role that
nutrition plays in glucose control and how this is translated into meal
plans. Ongoing practical instruction occurs at meals with campers
and counselors working together to insure proper individual exchanges in a
family style setting.
