JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS

Good communication skills.

Leadership ability to guide young people.

Work well with teenagers.

bullet

Ability to work in a team.

bullet

Knowledge of the care and treatment of diabetes.

bullet

Minimum age 24.

bullet

Medical background preferred.

bullet

Ability to get to all locations in camp where CITs may be working to supervise as needed and provide appropriate feedback.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Camp Director, and Medical Coordinator

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To train young people to become effective camp counselors, including the transition from camper to staff 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet

Mediator between staff and CITs.

bullet

To familiarize the CITs with:

–planning and leadership of activities
behavior management techniques
all aspects of camp operations
in-depth training in dealing with children effectively
experience in living in the cabin and helping to organize the groups
opportunities to observe and take part in staff communication and evaluation process

the importance of maintaining their own health/control during the demands of camp life

increased diabetes education opportunities

To carry out pre-camp training in conjunction with Medical Coordinator and Camp Director.

bullet

To clarify and educate the counselors of the role and responsibilities of the CITs.

bullet

To clearly differentiate the medical responsibilities of CITs vs. counselors (NO HANDS ON).

bullet

To conduct on-going diabetes education sessions as needed throughout the camp session; topics to be determined based on assessed need through individual and group discussions.

bullet

To assist CITs in the management and daily requirements of running the Camp Trading Post; use the opportunity to instill and assess levels of responsibility.

bullet

Maintain an excellent control of own diabetes and/or demonstrate a knowledgeable understanding of how diabetes impacts the role of a counselor with and without diabetes.

bullet

Provide mid-camp and end-of-camp CIT evaluations.  Share with CITs before the end of camp.

bullet

Do/assist with medical out-take of each CIT and share with parents information on their CIT experience.

bullet

Make recommendations for CITs to become Counselors in the future at post-camp key staff meeting.

bullet

Implement the nationwide CIT Curriculum as it becomes available.  In the meantime, anticipate its content and initiate as much as possible to enable camp to remain a leader in this area.
