JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet

COUNSELOR:  18-20 by August 1 and a High School Graduate.  One to two years of college education or the equivalent in camping experience preferred.

bullet

SENIOR COUNSELOR:  21 or older by August 1 with three to four years of college education or equivalent in camping experience preferred.

bullet

All must meet the minimum standards described in the Overall Staff Profile.

bullet

Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including hiking trips, overnights, moving equipment, perform activity skills as assigned

bullet

Willingness to learn more about leadership skills, camping skills, child development, diabetes and diabetes management.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Team Leader, Program Director, Medical Coordinator, Waterfront Director, and Camp Director

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet

Work effectively with campers and to place their needs above personal desires.

bullet

Apply specialized knowledge and skill in one or more camp program areas.

bullet

Organize and conduct specific activities with campers in small and large group situations.

bullet

Find enjoyment in outdoor living.

bullet

Practice healthy dietary and exercise habits.

bullet

Get along well with peers and supervisors.

bullet

Be committed to insuring the basic team philosophy of the camp.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet

Live in a cabin with a group of 15-18 campers, serving as their counselor, leader, role-model and friend.

bullet

With co-counselors, guide and direct cabin group in a variety of camp activities such as cabin program activities, overnights, and cabin/camp clean-up.

bullet

Help campers individually to adjust to camp and to live together as a group.

bullet

Maintain good relations with parents of campers.

bullet

Present a healthy and enthusiastic role model for campers.

bullet

See that safety rules for campers, cabins, program areas and general camp activities are not only posted, but followed.

bullet

Monitor campers' care of their diabetes which includes supervision of campers during blood testing and insulin administration.  Report any concerns or any other health-related matters to the Medical Staff.

bullet

Maintain active supervision of assigned campers during meals and snacks to ensure proper dietary education and compliance.

bullet

Facilitate campers' learning about diabetes.  Actively assist the members of the Medical Staff to increase each camper's understanding of own diabetes management.

bullet

Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, facilities and the natural environment.

bullet

Lead program activities as assigned by the Program Director.  Prepare and carry out lesson plans.

bullet

Actively participate in the planning and implementation of cabin, unit and camp programs and awards.

bullet

Carry out any duties assigned by the Program Director, Medical Coordinator or Camp Director.

bullet

Actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.

bullet

Supervise Counselor-In-Training assigned to cabin.  Provide evaluation/feedback during and at the end of camp to the CIT Director.

bullet

Effectively participate in end-of-season evaluations, reports, inventory and physical closing of camp.

bullet

Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy.

bullet

Interpret and enforce safety and health regulations.

bullet

Maintain good relations with other staff members.
