JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet

RN licensed to practice in the State of New Hampshire.

bullet

Feels comfortable working with children who have Type I Diabetes.

bullet

Ability to relate to individuals of a wide range in a close personal, recreational/educational setting.

bullet

Understands that the management of diabetes is a principal goal while working with campers and staff.

bullet

Good organizational skills.

bullet

Experience in camping, schools, hospital, visiting or public health nursing preferred.

bullet

Advanced knowledge of diabetes management, insulin pump therapy and site/set changes.

bullet

Medical liability coverage.

bullet

Strong interest in children with diabetes.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Camp Director re:  administration, programming,
Medical Director re:  medical orders/concerns

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and carry out a program of health care, education, and safety  

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre-camp:  discuss health care, education and safety procedures with staff.

bullet

Supervise care delivered by Health Center staff.

bullet

Report all hospital visits to camp Medical Director.

bullet

Administer insulin and medications under the authority of the camp physicians.

bullet

See to it that ALL medical treatments and situations are recorded to include:

  1. charting of insulin doses, insulin reactions and blood sugars

  2. sickness, injury, trauma, etc.

  3. medications administered

  4. ketone tests

  5. off-site labs

  6. assessment of diabetes and general health knowledge

Ensure that all records are complete, up-to-date and accurate.

bullet

Supervise preparation of first aid kits and reaction packs for emergency use to all counselors for use on hikes, waterfronts and out-of-camp trips.  Maintain procedures to keep all fully stocked and ready for use as needed as well as keeping track of any treatment given.

bullet

Instruct counselors in current basic first aid treatments as well as protocols for both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.  All such treatments must be reported to the medical staff for inclusion in records.

bullet

Instruct counselors how to set up and run cabin testing stations.  Maintain procedures to keep all fully stocked and ready for use as needed.

bullet

See that a physical check of campers is made on their arrival in camp and review any out of the ordinary information from the campers' records with the camp physicians, Director and Program Director.

bullet

Schedule needed medical staff according to the daily camp schedule and as needed for events, e.g., hikes, evening program, waterfront, canoe trips, etc.

bullet

Inform Camp Director and Program Director of any camper/staff member unable to participate in camp activities or programming due to medical incapacity.

bullet

Coordinate any hospital services required with camp physicians and Camp Director.  Campers/staff will be transported in the camp's authorized transportation vehicles, including EMS vehicles as deemed necessary.

bullet

Guide all staff in regard to their responsibilities in noting and reporting illness, injury or unsafe practices.

bullet

Prepare close of camp evaluation

bullet

Maintain written treatment records of campers and staff.

bullet

Recruit volunteer nursing staff.

bullet

Arrange for all supplies needed to provide routine diabetes care and first aid/medical care for campers and staff.
