JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet

MD licensed to practice in the State of New Hampshire who feels comfortable working with children who have Type I Diabetes.

bullet

DEA registration and medical liability coverage.

bullet

A strong interest in children with diabetes.

bullet

Knowledge of all aspects of diabetes management, including insulin pump therapy and site/set changes.

bullet

Specialty in pediatric endocrinology preferred.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Camp Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for physician staffing and overseeing all aspects of medical care provided at camp.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with the Medical Coordinator to ensure excellent medical coverage, adequate supplies, and proper diabetes management for campers and staff.

bullet

Ensure a minimum of two doctors per day, preferably one with a specialty in endocrinology and a second in pediatrics or family practice.

bullet

Available 24 hr/day on call by phone or in person.

bullet

Arrange for appropriate medical coverage for the opening and closing of camp to oversee medical intake and out-take.

bullet

Participate in and observe camp operation.

bullet

Review standing orders and health care plan annually; update as needed.

bullet

Actively participate in implementing improvements in camp operations.

bullet

Recommend/endorse improvements in medical supply orders.

bullet

Supervise/participate fully in the Specific Responsibilities of both Volunteer Nurses and Physicians, as follows:

  1. Insulin regulation and administration.  For those children unable to give injections, initiate teaching of insulin administration.  Actual administration of insulin may be included.  Document on medical records.

  2. Administer First Aid and respond to medical emergencies.

  3. Provide Health Center coverage.

  4. Consult with campers and staff as necessary.

  5. Refer campers/staff to Emergency Medical Services/Hospital as necessary.

  6. Administer other medications as needed and document on medical record.

  7. Attend planned excursions for campers prepared with reaction pack, first aid supplies, and any needed medications.

  8. Be available at all times for diabetic and/or other emergencies.

  9. Provide formal and informal teaching in diabetes and related topics.

  10. Monitor blood sugars and/or ketones before each meal, at bedtime and as needed.  Supervise tests when necessary.  Make sure campers have documented their results in their own log book.  Document test results on medical record.

  11. Provide night coverage.

  12. Provide ongoing orientation and diabetes education for non-medical staff with special emphasis on signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention of insulin reactions.

  13. Interact in daily team meeting on each child between medical and non-medical personnel.

  14. Maintain daily log of all incidents in bound "Incident Book" in addition to the medical record.

Perform other duties as mutually agreed upon with the Medical Coordinator and/or the Camp Director.
