JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet

MD, DO, PA, or ARNP licensed to practice in the State of New Hampshire who feels comfortable working with children who have Type I Diabetes

bullet

Basic knowledge of diabetes management, insulin pump therapy and site/set changes

bullet

DEA registration and medical liability coverage

bullet

Strong interest in children with diabetes 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Medical Director, Medical Coordinator, Camp Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists with medical coverage and overseeing all aspects of medical care provided at camp.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise insulin regulation and administration.  For those children unable to give injections, initiate teaching of insulin administration.  Actual administration of insulin may be included.  Document on medical records.

Available to Health Center to administer First Aid and respond to medical emergencies

bullet

Consult with campers and staff as necessary

bullet

Refer campers/staff to Emergency Medical Services/Hospital as necessary

bullet

Administer other medications as needed and document on medical record

bullet

Go on planned excursions for campers prepared with reaction pack, first aid supplies, and any needed medications

bullet

Be available at all times for diabetic and/or other emergencies

bullet

Provide formal and informal teaching in diabetes and related topics

bullet

Monitor blood sugars and/or ketones before each meal, at bedtime and as needed.  Supervise tests when necessary.  Make sure campers have documented their results in their own log book.  Document test results on medical record.

Rotate with medical staff for night call if necessary

bullet

Provide ongoing orientation and diabetes education for non-medical staff with special emphasis on signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention of insulin reactions

bullet

Interact in daily team meeting on each child between medical and non-medical personnel

bullet

Maintain daily log of all incidents in bound "Incident Book" in addition to the medical record

bullet

Perform other duties as delegated by the Medical Coordinator, Medical Director or Camp Director
