JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet At least 21 years of age
bullet Three years camping experience.
bullet Three years of college or equivalent experience in camping.
bullet Ability to supervise and organize adults.
bullet Interest, knowledge and skills in the program areas offered.
bullet Ability to teach and enthuse others.
bullet Professional development/experience in camping or related area (recreation, environmental studies, counseling, physical education, etc.) preferred.

RESPONSIBLE TO

Camp Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet Complete program activity of camp.
bullet Scheduling of campers and staff.
bullet Compliance of the camp and camp staff with the current American Camping Association Program Standards.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet

Develop master schedules for:

–Camper activity group assignments.

–Staff activity area assignments.

–Plan and carry out daily activity schedule.

–Hiking/trip assignments and scheduling.

bullet See that all camp programs are supported by current lesson plans.
bullet Ensure the proper utilization of lesson plans and equipment by counselors.
bullet Utilize Camper Optional Forms before and during pre-camp to schedule campers into their optional activities as soon as possible.
bullet Set up overall camp schedule and individual counselor schedules during pre-camp.  Provide copies of both to the Director’s Office.
bullet Take a pro-active role in pre-camp Counselor/Staff instruction.  Cover assigned areas in the pre-camp schedule.
bullet Check and approve appropriate evening program activities, counselor treats, green and white games.  Make suggestions for improvement where needed.
bullet Provide support for the CODs; facilitate their planning and implementation of evening programs.
bullet Work with the CIT Director to integrate CITs into the daily camp schedule, honoring as much as possible their individual preferences/areas for continued learning.
bullet Observe counselors in all activities, at meals and at snacks.  Provide support and positive feedback as much as possible and take corrective action if necessary.  Keep the Camp Director informed of any corrective action taken preferably before it is done.
bullet Continuously monitor the safety of the campers and staff in all activities and during all aspects of camp life.  Take corrective action for/report all observed potential safety concerns.
bullet Anticipate hiking assignments.  Notify Counselors of their assignments as far in advance as possible.  See that the Kitchen and Medical Staff are notified in a timely manner as well.
bullet Set up activity clipboards (e.g., hiking, ropes, waterfront).
bullet Carry out miscellaneous duties as assigned.
bullet Provide valuable input into the final individual counselor evaluations at an evaluation meeting held on or prior to the last full day of camp.  This should include specific examples reflecting each counselor’s overall performance in program their assigned program areas
bullet Prepare end-of-camp summaries of camper questionnaires, staff program evaluations, staff camp evaluations.
bullet Submit end-of-summer evaluations of overall camp program, making recommendations for future development and improvement.  Include equipment/supplies needed or anticipated for next year.
bullet Make recommendations for continued development of counselor/CIT potential in leadership roles and/or advanced training in program area(s).
