JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
bullet

Minimum 20 years of age.

bullet

1-2 years of college and/or equivalent experience in camping.  Additional formal education preferred.

bullet

Two years leadership experience in organized camping.

bullet

Possess a good working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of Carefree counselors and other camp staff.

bullet

Have insight into group dynamics, motivation techniques and the ability to guide others in a positive manner.

bullet

Certification in CPR, SFA and one or more program specialties preferred.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO

Camp Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with a second team leader to instruct, guide, motivate and inspire the counseling staff to provide at all times the best possible camp environment for the campers.

bullet

Provide both subjective and objective observation/feedback to the Counselors.  Be available to problem-solve with regard to counselor roles and responsibilities as described below.

Prepare for the camp season by attending conferences (when possible) and developing materials for use in staff training/motivation/evaluation.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
bullet

Contact each counselor, preferably by letter, prior to the start of camp to establish rapport and motivate the council for the exciting camp session ahead.  Introduce yourselves to, and welcome new counselors.

bullet

Act as a liaison between the staff and the Camp Director.

bullet

Work with the Camp Director to provide instruction in assigned topics to the staff during Pre-Camp.

bullet

Work with the Program Director in setting up Counselor activity assignments re:  Evening Programs, Counselor Treats, general activity classes, special events (hikes, etc.).

bullet

Assist in developing table assignments (camper/counselor match-ups) and cabin assignments.

bullet

Meet with the Camp Director before pre-camp, during pre-camp, camp & post-camp to keep communication lines open.

bullet

Be ready to go into different cabins as needed to provide hands-on teaching/ demonstration specific counseling skills e.g., handling difficult camper problems, getting campers into positive action modes, etc.  Lend experience.

Complete Observation Forms of Counselors throughout camp in activities as well as other areas where they interact with campers.  Provide feedback directly to Counselors involved and problem-solve with them.

Provide support to the camp staff as needed and re-direction as necessary throughout camp.

bullet

Report any concerns to the Camp Director.

bullet

Provide valuable input into the final individual counselor evaluations at an evaluation meeting held on or prior to the last full day of camp.

bullet

Participate in an end-of-camp meeting after the camp staff has departed at the end of post-camp.  Have information ready for the overall evaluation of the council and make recommendations for the next season.

Be prepared to perform all other counselor duties as described in the Counselor Job Description (3:03A) as needed
